Health Tip: Chicken Jerky Made in China Making Dogs Sick

There used to be a little jingle for Libby's foods that went: Read the label and set...a better table!

So true, even in pet foods! Check your chicken jerky treats - VERY few are made in the United States.

Reports of illnesses in dogs given chicken jerky treats have spiked dramatically following a new government warning about pet snacks made in China.
The federal Food and Drug Administration has logged at least 353 reports this year of illnesses tied to imported chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats, a spokeswoman said.

Even George Clooney Had a Home Check!

george-clooney-crop.jpgDon't take it personally if you apply to adopt a dog and the shelter or rescue group requires a home visit. Even George Clooney got one.

The actor tells Esquire he adopted his Cocker Spaniel mix, Einstein, from a shelter a year and a half ago.
So I go online and see Einstein. They had a whole film about him. It was actually really sweet. You see him all beat up and [stuff] in the shelter, and they show how they cleaned him up. God, I love this dog. So I called and said, "I like Einstein!"

The woman goes, "Well, we don't know if Einstein will like you."

"Well, can I meet with Einstein?"

"Yes, we'll bring him to your house, but if he doesn't like you, he can't stay. We have to have good homes for these dogs." She sounded very serious. (Read the full article.)
After the jump: Find out how George won Einstein over, plus: A pic of George with his pup.

george-clooney-440.jpgTo ensure the home visit would be a success, Clooney first rubbed his shoes down with turkey meatballs. When the shelter representative got to the door with Einstein, the dog threw himself at Clooney's feet.

"She says, 'I've never seen him react like that, ever!' And she left him with me on the spot," says PEOPLE magazine's two-time Sexiest Man Alive. "And forever, now, he just thinks of me as the guy with meatball feet. He loves me. I can do no wrong. He follows me everywhere."

Hey George, here's a little secret: When you adopt a dog, he'll love you and follow you everywhere, even without the meatball feet.

Thank you for helping BDBH at the holidays!

We have had so many people send us donations for the holidays, getting pet pictures taken, and more. We want to let you know how much it is appreciated. We especially love getting those holiday updates from past fosters!

For those of you who have lost a dog this year, we found this poem.

Christmas Without My Dog

The tree is all trimmed.
The gifts are all wrapped.
The hymns are all sung,
Ant the travel plans mapped.

And still there's a sadness
That lies in your heart,
For a dog that was lost
And a love now apart.

A stocking is missing,
With toys and a treat.
A lap is now empty,
A space at your feet.

Yet remember this season
God's small gift to you,
Wonderful memories
To treasure life through.

Help Us Name Two "T" Boys!

We have a special needs little litter of 2 - our holiday shelter pull. These two little boys will have a Chip In to help with their Puppy Strangles treatment (juvenile cellulitis). Q boy Quincey had this, but his was no where near as bad as what these teeny little guys have.

So does anyone want to name T1 and T2? A $40 donation will name these two little T boys.

Thanks to everyone who has already made our holidays special by helping to decorate our tree (it is looking AMAZING!), getting pictures done with Santa in Rochester and Buffalo and for everyone who helps us by volunteering, donating and supporting our efforts year round.

We appreciate it!
