Hetts says there 10 tips that everyone should remember when meeting a strange dog:
1. Let the dog come to you - don't reach for the dog
2. Keep your hands near your side
3. Avoid eye contact
4. Avoid facing the dog - turn the side of your body to the dog
5. Stand up straight or sit on the floor - don't lean over the dog
6. Keep your face away from the dog's face
7. No hugging or kissing unless you know the dog very well
8. Pet the dog under the chin
9. Limit speaking to the dog
10. Always watch the dog's body language
Hetts says dogs that feel threatened will show many signs through their body language including baring their teeth and growling, avoiding eye contact or staring someone down, flattening their ears against their head, wagging their tail slowly or leaning more on their front legs. She says rapid changes in body language indicate that the animal is more uncertain and therefore can be more unpredictable.

Parvovirus, Part II, Three Parvo Girls

Below we linked to some very important information about Parvo. Last summer, our area had a Parvo outbreak. In some areas in the south, there is a steady stream of Parvo cases.

Right now, BDBH has these three in a vet office in Kentucky, undergoing hopeful treatment for the parvovirus. Untreated, parvo kills 9 of 10 dogs. Treated, the success rate can be as high as saving 8 of 10 dogs, results though do vary. But the disease is hard on the dog, recovery can be lengthy, and if they do make it, treatment is quite expensive.

We are asking for your help in the treatment of our parvo gang: Rori, Rylee and Riva. The low estimate for treatment is $800 per dog, or $2400 total. We have set the Chip-In for a little over half that. We live in a world chock-full of arresting — and often overwhelming — sights, smells and sounds. But while you can block all that background static with state-of-the-art Bose headphones, your pets have no choice but to soak it all in.

From noise emitted by fluorescent light bulbs to overpowering air fresheners, there are many things that may seem innocuous to us — but can negatively affect your dog or cat's stress levels. Here's a look at some common sensory pet stressors.

Pet Sensory Offender #1: Noise Pollution

First, some background: Humans hear in the range of about 20–25,000Hz, while dogs fall in the 45–67,000Hz zone and cats in the range of 45–64,000Hz. Our voices come in at about the 300–3,000Hz range, so what this means is that there are lots of shrill sounds that can really bug your dog or cat.

Excessive or loud noises can create what is known as acoustic stress, which affects felines, in particular, since they can hear very high tones — about 1.6 octaves higher than humans and one octave above dogs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs, light dimmers, some CRT and LCD displays (computers, televisions, etc.), and tea kettles are all potential sources of high-frequency noise pollution that you may not even be aware of — unless you can hear like a cat.

If you really want to get serious about reducing ultrasonic noise pollution for your pets, start by turning everything down a notch — or three. TVs, iPods, video games, washing machines and dryers can all stress out noise-sensitive species, such as dogs and cats. Another tip that I practice with my own pets is to play low-volume classical music when they’re home alone. Believe it or not, there are even pet-specific composers out there creating stress-busting music for pets!

Pet Sensory Offender #2: Intense Odors

A cat’s sense of smell is estimated to be about 14 times more sensitive than ours. But that’s nothing compared with a dog’s powerful sniffer, which is thought to be 1,000 to one million times more powerful than a human nose. So there are plenty of aromas that could easily turn a dog or cat's tummy or tempt their taste buds — but we wouldn't even notice them.

Some potential sources of offensive (and often stressful) smells include cigarettes, carpet fresheners, cleaning agents and disinfectants, potpourri, hair spray and perfumes, scented litter and a host of air fresheners. So instead of masking an unpleasant odor, try to remove the source of the foul smell.

I know that's easier said than done, but a tiny trace to us is like an elephant-sized funk to some animals. I’m so sensitive about this that I even train my staff not to wear perfumes or scented deodorants to avoid upsetting my pet patients. Seriously.

Pet Sensory Offender #3: Visual Overload

Although our pets don’t get stressed by the murder and mayhem plot lines of crime shows before bedtime, the bright lights and moving images can light up their visual cortexes. So even though your dog or cat appears to be snoozing at your feet as you watch TV, they’re actually in stand-by mode, monitoring all the commotion.
My advice: If you want your pets to enjoy restful, restorative sleep, go to bed earlier, turn off the television and power down your smartphone, iPad and laptop. Help them (and you!) de-stress from a sensory-packed day by finally unplugging.

Don't take it personally if you apply to adopt a dog and the shelter or rescue group requires a home visit. Even George Clooney got one.

The actor tells Esquire he adopted his Cocker Spaniel mix, Einstein, from a shelter a year and a half ago.

So I go online and see Einstein. They had a whole film about him. It was actually really sweet. You see him all beat up and [stuff] in the shelter, and they show how they cleaned him up. God, I love this dog. So I called and said, "I like Einstein!"

The woman goes, "Well, we don't know if Einstein will like you."

"Well, can I meet with Einstein?"

"Yes, we'll bring him to your house, but if he doesn't like you, he can't stay. We have to have good homes for these dogs." She sounded very serious. (Read the full article.)

To ensure the home visit would be a success, Clooney first rubbed his shoes down with turkey meatballs. When the shelter representative got to the door with Einstein, the dog threw himself at Clooney's feet.

"She says, 'I've never seen him react like that, ever!' And she left him with me on the spot," says PEOPLE magazine's two-time Sexiest Man Alive. "And forever, now, he just thinks of me as the guy with meatball feet. He loves me. I can do no wrong. He follows me everywhere."

Help Us Name Two "T" Boys!

We have a special needs little litter of 2 - our holiday shelter pull. These two little boys will have a Chip In to help with their Puppy Strangles treatment (juvenile cellulitis). Q boy Quincey had this, but his was no where near as bad as what these teeny little guys have.

149 of you participated in the Write a Post, Help a Dog 2011 Campaign with Pedigree and Pedigree Foundation earlier this month. It might not have been as big of a turn out as we had hoped as our goal was to raise 10,000lbs of food but we did have to contend with Hurricane Irene blowing through in the middle.

We all know that when faced with something as major as a natural disaster blogging wasn’t necessarily the biggest thing on everyone’s minds that weekend. Still a valiant effort and huge thanks to those who participated because at 20-lbs. per blog post, 2,980-lbs. of new dry recipe Pedigree food will be going to homeless dogs that will make for a lot of full tummies and got the ball rolling on what I am about to tell you.

Pedigree and the Pedigree Foundation were watching the storm as it made landfall going up the East Coast in order to figure out what they could do to help make the biggest impact for those effected. (As a Pedigree Sponsored Blogger to BlogPaws 2011 I was actually sitting next to people from the Pedigree team talking about the Hurricane making landfall and how the animals will be effected and what kinds of supplies might be needed to help.)

After leaving BlogPaws and receiving damage reports from cities all along the East Coast Mars Petcare made the decision that they would like to donate 27,000lbs of dog food to those hardest hit by the Hurricane. After carefully assessing the most pressing needs in the areas affected by the storm, Mars Petcare has determined we can all make the biggest impact by donating the food to RescueBank—a national pet food distribution organization working to get dog food to where it’s needed most in the Albany, New York area.

We have raised the $1600 for the heartworm treatment of Dena, Darson, Keena and Mila! This is an unbelievable amount of support from all of you.

Thanks to everyone who has been donating, forwarding, and thinking of these dogs. We truly appreciate it. The names of all of those who made donations are on the right. We wish we could personally thank everyone who has supported us, and these dogs, throughout their treatment. Whether that support was care and concern, or a donation, every single one of you has made a difference.

Dena, Darson and Mila have completed all of their injections and are at varying stages of the one month post injection quiet. Keena will be starting, as enough Immiticide was available for her treatment to be started and completed.

A Day in the Life...

BDBH does all it can to help dogs in need. Of course, we cannot help them all.

So many things are happening that make it even harder to help. The economy making it difficult for people to keep the pets they love, the heartworm medicine unavailability now, and then the usual people disposing of pets just because.

To help people understand, we are going to post some of the pleas received by rescue in just one day. Please consider volunteering for your local rescue or shelter, please help to educate people about unwanted litters and giving dogs to unknown people and help your friends, family and neighbors be the pet owners that their pets need them to be.

Hi all,

Need urgent help please.....

My pal Kathy was asked to take a dog (large black Lab-Shep mix best guess, she looks like a pretty black German Shepherd) from a local who has already lost several dogs to getting hit by cars, or attacked by their aggressive Pit Bull. They have several dogs and cats, all un-vetted, all loose outside. Long story short, this sweet girl had a litter last year and the Pit Bull killed all of the pups. Now, she is ready to drop a litter any time. They decided they didn't want to deal with her and the pups, especially since the Pit Bull has recently attacked her and caused a leg injury all while she is preggo, so they dumped her on redacted since they knew she'd take her, she has a big soft heart. However, redacted works 3 jobs, and cannot take this on, so I told her I'd do all I could to help her find rescue. I tried calling xxxx with redacted Shelter. A volunteer answered & said they'd have her call me back as she was just out for a moment, but I still have not heard from her. There is sweet male Shepherd mix there, and the two seemed very bonded and we were told that they are always together, so it is likely that he is the Dad and that they will be pretty Lab-Shep pups, easy adopters.

I have not been very well, ... so sadly, I cannot take this dog on myself either. ... she seems to be a very sweet dog, and she allowed me to pet her all over, and examine her leg injury which is very worrisome! She really needs to see a vet ASAP. She has flea bite dermatitis and hair loss from the fleas and ticks, and bad ear tip inflammation from fly bites. All in all, she seems to have a nice and gentle temperament especially considering all she has been through. She has been around many dogs and cats and kids, as they have those in abundance at this home she came from.

Is there any chance that someone could take on a large dog ready to whelp? He belly is pretty large, who knows how many are in there. I estimate she will have them anytime now, but surely within a week. She has been through a really horrid, neglected life, she truly deserves a better one from now on. Kathy can bring her to whomever can take her.

Dear Big Dogs Big hearts,

A friend told me about your organization yesterday and I was wondering if maybe you could help. I rescued Sophie yesterday from being euthanized. I work at a vets office. Apparently her owners were moving and couldnt take her where they were going. Unfourtunatley their solution was to have her put down. I walked into work just as they were about to put her catheter in. I couldnt let this happen so I asked the owners to relinquish ownership to me and I took her home. She is a sweet dog and really needs to find a good home. I myself can not keep her because I live in an appartment and already have one dog. I just wanted to give her a chance to find a home. Sophie is a 9yr old mix. The owners said they thought she had Akita in her but weren't sure of the rest. I assume Chow as well because of her tongue. So far she has adjusted to the change well. She gets along with my dog and with all humans she meets. She met my cat this morning, who is not a fan of new animals, my cat hissed and Sophie sniffed and walked away. She was great in the car, is house broken, and so far seems well trained. If I had the space I would keep her myself. I would much rather see her go to a home for foster than to a shelter where, given her age, she might not have a chance. I may not have a choice in a few days though. Please let me know if there is anything you can do to help. Even if its just names of other organizations that I could contact that would be very helpful.

Thanks to your help, Dawson is in the second month of his heartworm treatment, having had the two injections last week. Dena is doing well with her first injection. Kenya is still taking care of her back end issues before starting her treatment, and Mila's first injection was postponed due to heat. Harley is still experiencing odd GI issues and we are on hold for his treatment.

Thanks to Stephanie and Bob for naming Quincey, fka as Boy 2. He is very happy to have a new name because Puppy seemed pretty generic! He is already showing big improvement in his strangles condition.

Thanks to Sam and Duke for naming Quinn, fka as Boy 1. He is enjoying the nice cool air of his new foster home and is just a big baby and will now come running to his brand new name.

Little girl has a name thanks to Lucy and Stetson! She will be called Quinoa (Keen-Wa), a pretty girly name for a pretty girly girl!

We've got part of a little family of puppies from a local owner surrender (another rescue taking the others). These little sweeties are German Shephounds? Redbone Shepherds? Mom was a Redbone Coonhound and dad a German Shepherd Dog. Whatever you want to call them, they are incredibly cute and in need of names.

Hi! I'm the new guy.

We got him right in to the vet today and he is on a big dose of prednisilone to suppress/stop his immune system from attacking itself and some cephalexin antibiotic to fix up his smile. He was a good boy at the vet and at 11 weeks is a solid 28 pounds!

And Then There Were Five...

On Monday, the Fourth of July, Harley had to go to the vet on an emergency basis because he wasn't eating, had a fever, and was not showing improvement from previous vet visits and Baytril. Harley is the Mega-e boy on the males page.

He had his bloodwork checked (bad then, much improved/normal now), a urinalysis, and as part of BDBH protocol, had his heartworm test (and tick - it's the SNAP 4) done again. BDBH tests when they come in and then again 6 months later because that's how heartworm works!

As you must have figured out, Harley is heartworm positive. Thankfully, he is eating well and doing much better than he was on Monday, but now he will need to be kept quieter and away from other dogs who may not be on prevention. We are working on a plan for Harley and will keep you posted!

Another of the Heartworm Four - But No Treatment Yet!

Meet Kenya.

This sweet girl came from a shelter in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Seeing that sad face, and having had a wonderful BDBH dog come from there (Luka), a rescue in GA sent a volunteer to evaluate her at BDBH's request.

The results of the evaluation were not good. While this dog was described as absolutely one of the sweetest the evaluator had ever met, it was discovered that she was unable to walk - her hind end seemed paralyzed. The evaluator was moved to tears by this dog's condition. BDBH found out that the shelter had actually sent her to a vet and got additional information. Despite all the negatives, BDBH decided to give this sweet dog a chance.

She actually has shown improvement in her gait and walking/movement as time has gone by. It is possible she has a disc or back problem, but it is guessed that she had an FCE, which is also called a spinal stroke.

Of course as you know, it turned out that she was heartworm positive. But she was also unable to walk well! Had a big sore on her leg, possibly from the dragging! Unspayed! So many things to look at and parse out.

So she was staged for heartworm - and it was discovered she was in the early stages of infection. This meant, if she was a candidate, she could go through Physical Therapy at Thera-Vet. She went to her new regular vet and then there, and it was decided she could start PT. This is in addition to her heartworm costs, but Kenya is showing the will and the heart to continue to improve. What a great investment in a wonderful dog! We will keep you posted on www.bdbh.org and here.

Heartworm Dog Darson Update

Darson has started his treatment. He had his first shot last week.

From his foster home:
Darson is coming along very well. He doesn't really like the crate rest but he's managing.

He is eating all of his food and has gained 2 needed pounds since the treatment. He is still drinking a lot of water but that's normal according to the vet.

Why does treatment for heartworm disease for one dog cost about as much as 28 years of year round prevention for one dog?

Short answer: Immiticide.

AKA Melarsomine (made by Merial)

Melarsomine is the drug of choice for the first stage and is effective for killing adult heartworms living in the arteries of the lungs.
Melarsomine is an arsenic-based drug. Although these drugs are known to kill adult heartworms, the exact method of the killing action is unknown.
Melarsomine is a prescription drug and can only be obtained from a veterinarian or by prescription from a veterinarian.

Lots of times we don't know much about the dogs we get, and their lives before coming to us.

With Mila, we do know enough to tell her Heartworm story and how she became infected. So we will start with her!

Mila was well loved and in a home for 8 years of her life. When her person got sick, she was taken in by relatives, saving her from a shelter. But not using the heartworm prevention that her person had gotten for her at Mila's last vet visit (we have the invoices - Mila was lucky to have a person who took good care of all her needs). So Mila was outside, in Western New York, without heartworm prevention. And she got heartworm disease.

We tested her in December when we got her, and she tested negative because the infection was just beginning and didn't show. But when we tested her in June, the adult worms were there and she was diagnosed with heartworm disease.

Heartworm happens in Upstate New York. We think it is happening more. Please consider helping us help the Heartworm Four by donating, forwarding, posting, and sending good thoughts out.

Why Heartworm?

Currently BDBH has FOUR Heartworm positive dogs, three of the last four dogs accepted into the program were heartworm positive. In our previous post we explained a little about heartworm. There is so much to tell!

We are going to blog about heartworm this summer. We'll talk about the mosquitoes, the prevention, the worms, the treatment. We will follow Mila as she goes through her treatment.

And hopefully, dog by dog, we will get the message out:
Preventing heartworm is...
1. Easier
2. Healthier
3. Cheaper
Than treating heartworm disease.

Right now, as we sometimes need to do, we are reaching out for reason #3: cost of heartworm treatment. Average cost locally for staging and treating heartworm is $700 for a medium-large dog.

So 4 HW+ dogs = approximately $2800
Or 336 large dog Interceptor heartworm prevention pills!
That's enough for 28 years of heartworm pills, if given year round!
Or 7 years of heartworm pills given year round per dog at prices found from a reputable online pet pharmacy.
Wow!

So can you help us help these dogs go through heartworm treatment? Although heartworm treatment can be dangerous, so are the heartworms themselves. Adult heartworms are large, growing up to 12 inches in length and living as long as five years. They can plug up the pulmonary arteries, and when the infestation becomes severe, they will start to back up into the heart and eventually fill it. They can cause blood clots, and force the heart to work abnormally hard to pump blood through the clogged arteries. In addition, heartworms cause an extreme inflammatory response in the arteries that can affect other parts of the body, especially the kidneys and liver.

Treatment for heartworm infection is one area where conventional veterinary medicine offers valuable options.

This was a PHEW! Mr. Harley did not have a torn ACL and was able to use his get out of surgery card for this incident - crate rest and TLC is his Rx.

Little Phoenix had to go to the vet today because he was vomiting - it seems that the incredible parasite load he was carrying was making him sick. Mom and pups have been dewormed again. It is much harder to do this now because the worms have the upper hand - it is obvious that there was no pre-natal care for poor Mom before she and the pups were dropped off at the shelter.

Here is a picture of this beautiful family so happy to be in a loving foster home, getting food and care.

We have names for 11 puppies! Leaving poor little #8 with their number right now.

Our First Family Fundraiser!

Willow and pups were in a high kill shelter in Georgia.

Working together with some Georgia rescue friends, Big Dogs committed to helping this mom and her 12 one month old (right now) puppies.

This is our "P litter" of puppies - all of their names will begin with the letter P.

This is where you come in! We present to you the very first BDBH Name a Pup and/or Virtual Foster fundraiser!

Name a Pup:

Allows you to name a puppy from this litter for a donation of $40. The name needs to begin with the letter P.
When you click the donate button: BDBH Paypal and sign in, be sure to tell us what name, and what puppy (they are all numbered).
We will have to go by the time if there are two people naming the same puppy, and will go until they are all named!

Virtual Fosters!

Only $10 to be a virtual foster.
You can be a virtual foster to as many puppies as you want.
All puppies can have multiple virtual fosters.
Virtual foster donations help the rescue and the real foster home pay for things like milk replacement supplements, foods, supplies for these 12 puppies!
But virtual fosters don't have to clean up after them and you can post them on Facebook and share with friends and family to show off your puppy!

Please note Willow and puppies are under medical evaluation and will not be ready for adoption until healthy and old enough to be spayed/neutered.

So after all of that, let us introduce to you 12 nameless puppies! Please help us to name and virtually foster them!

Big Dogs Big Hearts Rescue Inc. is dedicated to Rescuing, Rehabilitating and Re-homing large breed (pure or mixed breed) dogs, thus helping to reduce the number of homeless stray dogs and the need for euthanasia in shelters.

BDBH Rescue concentrates on rescuing German Shepherds, other Large Breed dogs and occasionally Mixed Breeds. Most of the dogs come from local shelters and shelters in the Southern United States. Some come from owners who have requested our help in finding a new home for their pet.

Dogs like Dozier, Lobo, Jerry, Froggy, Halo, Kyah, and others have all had situations where the rescue did amazing things to help them.
